Character Development- main character

We began to go through our character development, and as you can see at this point were are working out the characters personality and how he will act. This will all play apart in making our opening sequence more typical of the genre; plus it would be easier to portray the character if we construct him from the inside out.

We wanted to experiment with names so we came across this website which allowed us to look up action hero names to put in our film. Here are a couple of examples

Skyfall Opening Sequence Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrSJP2PtAP8 MISE-EN-SCENE thoughout this opening sequence mise-en-scene is used heavily in order for the setting and mode to be easily identified. straight away as an audence you are hit with low key lighting, this immediatley establishes the mood of the film as a dark action packed movie, furthermore the low key lighting keeps you guessing whether the figure is a protagonist or antagonist becuase all you can see is a siloutte. Also the costume that is present on the main character is very typical of a protagonist as he is dressed smartly and is looking to help people, this also helps the audience establish the protagonist. Props are used in this opening sequence to make sure the audience recognise what genre of fim this is, for example straight away you immediatly see a gun which suggests that it is going to be a film wiht an action genre. Sound In this opening sequence it starts off with no sound, this keeps the audience on edge as they are eagerly waiting for something to happen. However, before the film starts there is a score which is assosiated with every James Bond film this clearly highlights to the audience that this film is going to be the similar to the other ilms in the James Bond franchise. As soon as the protagonist leaves the desolute bulding to go into the busy street the silence turns into a song with quite a high tempo which is consistant with the surrondings. CameraWork Immediatly in this scene the camera is out of focus to hide the protagonists face and add a bit of mystery into the audience to get them instantly gripped to the film and mmake them want to find out who it is, this is followed by an extreme close up of James Bonds eyes, this extreme close up lets the audience know who the main character is and sets the tone for the rest of the film. Th fact that all you could see was his eyes suggests that the film is going to have an element of mystery to it. As well as this, when James Bond goes out onto the busy street there is an establishing shot which sets the scene for the audience, this also has one of the many conventions of an Action/Adventure genre present in the first two minutes with it being set in an exotic location, this further grips the audience as they want to know what he is doing there but it also adds a sence of exitment as it is something that they are not used to seeing. Editing During this opening sequence there is a shot/reverse shot with James Bond and Agent Robon who is found dying, this shot/reverse shot lets the audience know that this agent was very importnant and whatever he was trying too protect is going to set the pace and scene for the rest of the film. For the most part of this opening sequence there is slow paced editing this is due too the scene still being set and James Bond has not found the person he was looking for yet, also the editing has to be slow to fit the flow of the film otherwise it woul look really weird if there was lots of fast editing when nothing is really happening.

Pirates Of The Caribbean Curse Of The Black Pearl Opening Sequence Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfPYuI1cBpc Mise-En-Scene In the opening sequence of the pirates of the caribbean mise-en-scene is used heavily through the use of props, setting, costume and lighting. Costum is a massive factor in this scne as the main characters are clearly highlighted through there more extravagant clothing which shwos they have power. as well as this, the setting is key as this film is about pirates so therefore it needs to be set in a place in which the auience will recognise and associate with pirates. low-key lighting is used in this clip to foreshadow danger and lots of action within the film. Also in this clip one ery effective prop which is used is the fog, this prop foreshadows danger and also the fact that the fog tops them from seeing sggests that there is going to be something surprising very shortly. Sound At the start you are introduced into the film by a little girl singing, this is very spooky as there is a little girl alone on a boat but also the dead silence around her makes the voice echo even more creating a more spooky tone which can give the audience a eary feel. Throughout the whole of this opening sequence there is a constant humming in te background, this further adds to the eariness of the opening sequence as they are in the ocean so there should be no noise at all. Later on in the clip there is also screaming as a ship has been set on fire or has blown up and a little boy has floated up to the main boat that the film had been set on up to that point. this further exagerates the creeepines of this film as they are only 3:31 in to the film and there has already been what seems multiple deaths. CameraWork At the start the camers zooms in on Elizabeth, this instantly lets the audience know who one of the main characters are as they are the first charater you see and also that character has a long part of screen time which shows that she is important in the film. Another bit of camera work used is this film is an extreme close up this is used at 0:37 and the close up is of a mans hand grabbing onto Elizabeths shoulder, this adds an element of mystery to the film as the audience dont know who is grabbing this little girl who seems very vulnerable and innocent. In this opening sequence there is a shot/reverse shot between Elizabeth and her father this shows that they are both extremely important to the film as they are getting as much screen time as one another. Editing In this clip the boy that sees dead floating on the logs fades in, the fade in makes the boy seem more mysterious and also adds a cryptic feel to the film as it keeps the audience guessing on where he came from, Furthermore once he has faded in to the scene he gets a lot of screentime which suggests the he is ver influential to the film.
