Skyfall Opening Sequence Analysis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrSJP2PtAP8
MISE-EN-SCENE
thoughout this opening sequence mise-en-scene is used heavily in order for the setting and mode to be easily identified. straight away as an audence you are hit with low key lighting, this immediatley establishes the mood of the film as a dark action packed movie, furthermore the low key lighting keeps you guessing whether the figure is a protagonist or antagonist becuase all you can see is a siloutte. Also the costume that is present on the main character is very typical of a protagonist as he is dressed smartly and is looking to help people, this also helps the audience establish the protagonist. Props are used in this opening sequence to make sure the audience recognise what genre of fim this is, for example straight away you immediatly see a gun which suggests that it is going to be a film wiht an action genre.
Sound
In this opening sequence it starts off with no sound, this keeps the audience on edge as they are eagerly waiting for something to happen. However, before the film starts there is a score which is assosiated with every James Bond film this clearly highlights to the audience that this film is going to be the similar to the other ilms in the James Bond franchise. As soon as the protagonist leaves the desolute bulding to go into the busy street the silence turns into a song with quite a high tempo which is consistant with the surrondings.
CameraWork
Immediatly in this scene the camera is out of focus to hide the protagonists face and add a bit of mystery into the audience to get them instantly gripped to the film and mmake them want to find out who it is, this is followed by an extreme close up of James Bonds eyes, this extreme close up lets the audience know who the main character is and sets the tone for the rest of the film. Th fact that all you could see was his eyes suggests that the film is going to have an element of mystery to it. As well as this, when James Bond goes out onto the busy street there is an establishing shot which sets the scene for the audience, this also has one of the many conventions of an Action/Adventure genre present in the first two minutes with it being set in an exotic location, this further grips the audience as they want to know what he is doing there but it also adds a sence of exitment as it is something that they are not used to seeing.
Editing
During this opening sequence there is a shot/reverse shot with James Bond and Agent Robon who is found dying, this shot/reverse shot lets the audience know that this agent was very importnant and whatever he was trying too protect is going to set the pace and scene for the rest of the film. For the most part of this opening sequence there is slow paced editing this is due too the scene still being set and James Bond has not found the person he was looking for yet, also the editing has to be slow to fit the flow of the film otherwise it woul look really weird if there was lots of fast editing when nothing is really happening.
